Note: Claude Galle (1759-1815) was one of the foremost bronziers and fondeur-ciseleurs in Paris during the reigns of Louis XVI to Napoleon. In 1786 he became a maitre-fondeur, and after the death of his father-in-law, Pierre Foy, in 1788, he took over his workshop. Galle grew the workshop into one of the finest in Paris with approximately 400 craftsmen. Galle was entrusted with many commissions from The Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, under the direction of sculptor Jean Haure. Over the decades of work, Galle collaborated with many of the finest artisans, including Pierre-Philippe Thomire and provided the majority of the furnishing bronzes for the Chateau de Fontainebleau during the Empire period. He received many other Imperial commissions, among them light fittings, figural clock cases and vases for the palaces of Saint-Cloud, the Trianons, the Tuileries, Compiegne and Rambouillet. He also supplied several Italian palaces such as Monte Cavallo in Rome and Stupinigi near Turin. Galle's business was continued by his son after his death. More of his work can be seen at the Chateau de Malmaison, the Musee Marmottan in Paris and the Museo de Reloges at Jerez de la Frontera, the Residenz in Munich and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

In good overall condition with minor wear and rubbing to the gilded surface. One small piece of a mount (1 1/2 in.) on the base is lacking. The wings on the right figure have been repaired, and there is an old drill hole on the top cover which may be a replacement. One old drill hole in the base, presumably for an electrical wire. Very fine quality bronze work.
