Gouache on paper, 1908, signed 'Eug. Zak' and dated upper left. 9 x 9 1/4 in. (sheet), 181 2/ x 18 1/2 in. (frame).Note: Born in Minsk (today Belarus) and educated in Warsaw, Eugeniusz Zak moved to Paris in 1902 to study at the École des Beaux-Arts and later at Académie Colarossi. He worked in France, travelling to Italy, Munich, Brittany and Switzerland, before moving with his family to his wife's hometown in Poland. In 1923, after living in Germany for a year, he moved back to Paris where he would live until his sudden death in 1926.This work is typical of the style he worked in during his visits to Brittany in 1906 to 1908. The use of flat areas with distinct lines and colors is associated with the Nabis School. The folk figures of Brittany, such as the man here, were a popular subject among his Parisian artist friends.,
