Watercolor and gouache on paper laid down on paperboard, signed with initials 'EB' and dated lower right. 14 x 10 3/8 in. (sheet), 24 x 20 in. (frame).Note: Although best-known for his work as a theater designer, Berman was an accomplished painter, having studied in Paris after fleeing Russia with his family in 1918. Berman was part of a group of artists known as 'Neo-Romantics'. He also explored surrealist subjects, like nature/fantasy, and would combine both styles to create dream-like imagery, often alluding to dark ideas and the fallibility of life.
