Note: Anne Ryan was a self-taught writer, printmaker and painter who began making collages at age fifty-eight. The medium would become her preferred creative expression over the last six years of her life. Ryan was introduced to collage-making during a visit to a 1948 exhibition of the work of German sculptor and collagist Kurt Schwitters. In her earliest collage works from 1949-1950, Ryan emulates Schwitters' incorporation of snippets of language into the composition, as here.
