Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed 'Thon' lower right.
29 1/2 x 21 in. (sheet), unframed.
Note: Maine native William Thon spent his life along its shores, painting the Maine landscape, seaside and sailboats. An avid and talented sailor, Thon felt at one with the sea, cultivating a philosophy that supported these mutual loves. Throughout his life Thon held fast to his aesthetic beliefs, creating works on paper that reveal the poetic way he viewed his environment, full of expression and subtle emotion. Thon lost most of his vision due to macular degeneration but continued to make his art, relying solely on black pigment in his final years. The subject of many of his last drawings is the saiboats he lived his life on along the coast of Port Clyde.
