Note: When this painting was sold in 1987 it was noted that there was an inscription on the reverse that read 'Keene Valley, N.H. [sic]/painted by William Hart/of Armsby Hart (Bro.)/Aug 15/75/Attest W. W. Laughton'. The wax lining now covers the inscription. Gary Stiles, the Hart expert, notes that the Keene Valley referenced is in New York and not New Hampshire. In the summer of 1875, Hart was at the Keene Flats in the Adirondacks and painted a significant number of works there, all with similar titles to this work.
