Note: Clearly inspired by the work of George Bullock (d. 1818), this Grecian-designed chair bears the stamp 'C MUNRO'. While very little is known of this maker, the Trafalgar suite at Brighton Pavilion also bears his stamp. Sets of side chairs of virtually the same model stamped by Munro or G. Bryson were sold in 'An English Look - Robert Kime, Piers von Westenholz, David Bedale and James Graham-Stewart', Christie's, South Kensington, July 8, 2009, lots 181 (Bryson) and 182 (Munro). Another of this model stamped Bryson was sold at Christie's, London, November 18, 2010, lot 192. Bryson was George Bryson, a chair-maker from Scotland who moved to London in the early 19th century (C.M. Anderson, 'W. Bryson and the Firm of Holland and Sons', Furniture History XLI (2005), pp. 217-30. Munro was said to be an Edinburgh maker recorded from 1808-1812 (Antiques Magazine, vol. 90, p. 325).
