Benton' at center, dated and inscribed 'To Alfy/In memory of the hurricane, Carol, which we "did" together/Tom' at top, with various inscriptions on the reverse. 9 x 6 1/4 in. (sheet), 13 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. (frame). Note: When Hurricane Carol hit Martha's Vineyard in 1958, both Alfred Eisenstaedt and Benton rushed out to record it, Eisenstaedt with his camera and Benton with his sketchbook. Benton's The Hurricane Carol on Menemsha was painted from these sketches and was eventually acquired by Eisenstaedt. The two artists shared a long friendship.
