Marked 'Sterling', the obverse inscribed, in fitted case. 4 in. diam., approx. 10.67 oz. Note: The Hudson-Fulton Celebrations jointly commemorated the 300th anniversary of the discovery of the Hudson River, and the centenary of steamboat navigation. The event was held between September 25 to October 11, 1909 (the celebrations in Hudson were between October 4th and 7th, and in Albany the days following). The large silver medal by Emil Fuchs was the official medal of the celebrations, and was jointly produced by the Commission and the American Numismatic Society. The medal was struck in a wide variety of sizes and metals, ranging from 1 1/2 in. (in base metal) to 4 in. in diameter in silver. The majority of medals were made for sale to the public, and the total 123,698 struck reflects the wide-spread interest in the event. However, only one hundred examples of the large size (4 in.) medals in silver (as here) were made for presentation to members of the Commission and to Principal Guests. This medal together with the two guest's medals indicate that the recipient was an individual of some importance. The lot is of particular interest to inhabitants of Columbia County (Hudson made landfall in 1609, at Stuyvesant).
