Note: Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati, and is one of the best known and most worshiped deities in the Hindu pantheon. He is portrayed with an elephant head, numerous arms holding a variety of elements and a large protruding belly,  either sitting, standing or dancing. He can be accompanied by consorts and often, in five of his eight incarnations, has a rat at his feet which represents a pest that needs to be overcome. Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles thus referred to as the Lord of Obstacles. In this bronze rendering,  Ganesha has a crown and a third eye, representing intelligence, and is the patron of arts and sciences as well as the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honored at the start of rites and ceremonies. Ganesha is also invoked as the patron of letters and learning during writing sessions.
