Upholstered in Chanel silk pink and tan tweed fabric.
40 1/2 x 22 x 23 1/2 in. Seat height 19 in.
Note: These chairs were most likely made by Peter Marino for Julia and David H. Koch for their 1040 Fifth Avenue apartment in New York, which formerly belonged to Jackie Kennedy Onassis, or for one of Mrs. Koch's later residences.
Though these chairs are Georgian in shape and scale, they are arguably modeled after an 18th-century example that was spotted in Venice, Italy, by British icon Syrie Maugham, one of the tastemakers of the 1930s and 1940s. She was greatly inspired by the antique furnishings made in La Serenissima, a city that Marino also holds dear, thanks to his executive position with Venetian Heritage. Indeed, the chairs might have been manufactured by Maugham or by the Manhattan-based interior decorator John Gerald, her business partner for a time. He purchased much of Maugham’s stock and designs at a bankruptcy sale shortly before her death in 1955 and reproduced them for a time under both names. Stuart Greet, a British-born Manhattan interior decorator and dealer, also recreated some of Maugham’s pieces, though enlarging them for modern tastes in the 1970s. Then again, more likely, the seating might have been created by one of Marino’s ateliers, closer in time to our own.
