Note: Iraqi artist Saadi Al Kaabi is a member of his native country's second generation of Modernists, drawing on the rich and diverse heritage of Islamic art. His work from the 1960s experimented with Western traditions of Cubism and Expressionism, but as his work matured, Al Kaabi began to incorporate Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian influences into his work, creating more stylized, nuanced compositions. Al Kaabi's work is part of a larger post-independence artistic vision focused on establishing a new artistic identity in the Arab world of the 21st century. Both this painting, and the one in Lot 214, were gifts of Queen Rania of Jordan who has been a great promoter of Islamic art and a champion of education and community empowerment.
