Oil on canvas, 1945, titled and inscribed 'by Rockwell Kent' and 'authenticated by Sally Kent 9/23/72' in Sally Kent's hand on the reverse, with label from Bayview Gallery, Camden, ME. 20 x 24 in., 26 x 30 in. (frame). Provenance: The artist; Spanierman Gallery; James Rosenberg: Bayview Gallery, Camden, ME; A Corporate Collection; Sold Sotheby's, New York, September 28, 2012, Lot 130. Note: This is view of Kent's beloved Asgaard Farm in the Adirondacks, painted in the morning light facing west towards Lake Placid and the Saranac Lake region. Kent found inspiration and respite in rugged and remote landscapes. His stark, Realist style illuminates the subtle beauty of a wild, mountainous landscape that is quintessentially American. Asgaard Farm & Dairy was Kent's home from the 1920s until his death in 1971. It was a working dairy farm and continues as one today, along with offering lodging in The Emerson House which was designed by Kent in the 1930s to serve as a guest house. The word Asgaard comes from Norse mythology meaning 'the heavenly dwelling of the Norse gods and slain war heroes'. This work is included in Scott R. Ferris' and Richard V. West's annotated checklist of the paintings of Rockwell Kent.
