Marley was a Unitarian Universalist minister who trained at the Union Theological seminary in NYC and was a signer of the Humanist Manifesto in 1933. Rockwell Kent and Reverend Marley were friends and shared ideas on Theology and Humanism. Marley wrote to Kent in a 1942 letter that this drawing was "beautiful, meaningful...this new art child which has come to me just today. I am proud of your creation. Here is an earth-rooted trinity, not a shaky fatherhood of mysticism." Scott R. Ferris, noted scholar of the artist's work, has suggested that the paper attached to the bottom of the drawing was possibly done so by Marley.
