Note: These portraits are after a well-known pair painted by James Sharples in 1798. Sharples (1751-1811) was an English artist who lived between America and England in the late 18th to early 19th century, residing in both Philadelphia and New York. During this period, he achieved his goal of painting George Washington after his return to private life. The long-standing admiration of George and Martha Washington as public figures led to the continued popularity of these silhouettes.
