Oil on canvas, signed 'Raphael Delorme' lower right, titled on the stretcher.
57 x 38 in., 59 x 40 1/2 in. (frame).
Note: French artist Raphael Delorme began his career as a theatre designer in Paris, finally devoting himself to painting at the encouragement of a cousin. His background in theatre can be seen in his compositions through the influence of the theatre set and its use of architectural elements to evoke time and place. Stylistically, Delorme's work incorporates many of the characteristic elements of the Art Deco style prevalent in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. Delorme was a great admirer of Ingres and his handling of the female nude form, the influence of which can be seen in the figures here.
