Note: The Greek marble sculpture of the Laocoön was excavated in Rome in 1506 and placed on public display at the Vatican, where it remains today. The group has been called the prototypical icon of human agony in Western Art. The figures are near life size and represent the Trojan priest Laocoön (central figure) flanked by his sons being attacked by sea serpents.
