Note: Fornasetti designed only one type of corner furniture of which this lot is an example. It is decorated with shells, one of this favorite motifs, which he used along with other natural forms to decorate the wide range of his designs from furniture to fabrics and ceramics. It is likely that this piece was the result of a collaboration with Gio Ponti, the renowned Italian architect and designer, which began in the 1940's and which combined Ponti's skill as a designer of furniture with simple lines with Fornasetti's flair for exuberant decoration. As Ponti commented in 1962, "In our age of pronounced distrust of decoration Fornasetti happily reveals its importance".
Illustrated in Patrick Mauriès, Fornasetti, Designer of Dreams, 1991, p 267, and dating the piece to 1950.
