Black crayon on beige paper tipped to paperboard, signed 'Manship' and titled lower left. 17 x 12 in. (sheet), 25 x 20 in. (frame). Note: After discovering he was color blind at the age of fifteen, Paul Manship decided he wanted to be a sculptor. In 1905, he began his studies under Solon Borglum at the Art Students League in New York City and then spent three years studying in Rome which ignited his interest in antiquity and classicism. His large-scale public commissions include the Prometheus Fountain in Rockefeller Center and the entrance gates to the Central Park Zoo and the Bronx Zoo.
