Bronze, 1924, signed 'P. Manship' and dated lower left, on a brown marble base. 8 x 6 x 3 1/2 in., base 3 3/4 in. high. Note: From the Greek meaning 'Venus Rising from the Sea', Venus Anadyomene is one of the representations of the goddess Aphrodite. She is often represented as a goddess wringing out her wet hair, as here. Manship's interest in antiquity and Greek subjects is rendered here in his iconic stylistic manner, incorporating the graceful lines of classicism while referencing Boticelli's painting The Birth of Venus as well as Bouguereau's sculpture of the same title.
