Wood engraving in black on tissue, 1935, signed and titled in pencil, from the edition of 200. 7 1/2 x 10 3/4 in. (sheet), unframed. Note: Paul Landacre moved to Southern California from his native Ohio in 1917 and became part of California's art scene between the two world wars. He was a self-taught printmaker and is widely considered the best wood engraver of the modern era. He was fascinated with printmaking and experimented with the technically advanced mediums of woodcut and wood engraving, mastering them both and elevating the medium. Many of his best prints depict landscapes in and around Big Sur, Laguna and Monterey, rendered in Landacre's modernist style. Wood engraving differs from the woodcut technique in the tools used to create the image on the block of wood. Wood engravings are made with the same type of burin tool used to carve into a metal plate for a traditional engraving, allowing for a finer line and more intricate designs. Printmakers working with this technique often used the wood's end grain, rather than the softer side grain, which also allowed for greater detail and could be put through a regular printing press. Landacre's wood engravings were printed on a nineteenth-century Washington Hand Press. Condition: With margins. Tipped to a paper mount at the top corners. Creasing at the top corners. Old clear tape and glue at three places at the top sheet edge. Extremely pale light-staining.
