Oil on canvas, unsigned, lined. 39 x 23 in., 48 x 32 in. (frame). Provenance: Giovanni Pratesi, Florence. Literature: S. Bellesi, Diavolerie, magiee incantesimi nella pittura barocca fiorentino, illus. pp 70-74. Note: In the 17th Century Stregonerie, or scenes of witchcraft, developed as a sub-genre of European painting. In Italy, cultural superstition and the Church kept these images away from a wider audience, but in the 17th Century images of witched and magic became more common. Several Florentine painters depicted this subject matter, including Salvator Rosa and Dandini's father, the painter Pier Dandini.
