Note: Born in Prenzlau, Prussia (now Germany), Oscar Bluemner immigrated to the US in 1892 after receiving a degree in architecture from the Royal Technical Academy in Berlin. Between 1896 and 1900, Bluemner lived in Chicago and New York, traveling between the two cities for work. After a frustrating business transaction with a fellow architect in 1907, Bluemner decided to re-focus on his painting talent, working in a Neo-Impressionist style. Following an extended trip back to Europe in 1912, Bluemner become interested in German Expressionism and Italian Futurism. He integrated both of these styles into his work. Bluemner found little recognition during his lifetime, having only a handful of gallery exhibitions. The importance of his work, as well as his significant writings on art, found their audience well after the artist's death in 1938.
