Note: Beacon Genealogic and Heraldic Research provided the following information regarding the coat of arms in the upper right quadrant of this painting:
"Arms: Sable a chevron between three horses’ heads erased argent
We may hazard to identify the gentleman as being Edward East (born circa 1535 died before 1610), of Radnage1 in the County of Buckinghamshire, whilst the lady Lot 37) is Cicely Fettiplace (born circa 1540 died after 1609). Although, the exact date and place of Edward and Cicely’s marriage is not presently known they were stated as being married around the year 1560. According to the Heralds’ Visitation of the County of Buckinghamshire that took place in the year 1566, Edward was the eldest son of Thomas East of Radnage aforesaid and his wife, Dorothy Penn, whilst Cicely was the daughter and sole heiress of Francis Fettiplace, of Standlake in the County of Oxfordshire and his wife, Alice Woodward. Cicely’s father, Francis upon his death in 1558 settled his estate at Standlake known as Golofers upon her. It is known that in 1573 Cecily and Edward settled the Manors of Golofers and Giffards, the latter was also called Standlake Fiennes, on themselves and their heirs. It is recorded in the Heralds’ Visitation of 1566 that Edward and Cecily had a daughter and heiress named Dorothy.
The impaled arms of East and Fettiplace were tricked together with a further miscellaneous pedigree for East, of Radnage in the Heralds’ Visitation of the County of Buckinghamshire that took place in the year 1634. The arms of Fettiplace may be blazoned as follows: ‘Quarterly 1st and 4th Gules two chevrons argent (for Fettiplace) 2nd and 3rd Argent three torteaux (for Besills)."
Panel split horizontally at center, backed with wood. Scattered craquelure, small losses, and surface soiling. Panel warped.
