Note: Germantown textiles, woven between 1885-1900, are an anomaly among Navajo weavings. The Navajo were first and foremost sheepherders, and the wool they got from their sheep was put to good use in their textiles. During this period, however, the Navajo acquired commercially spun and dyed wool through trade. Most of this wool was factory produced in Germantown, Pennsylvania, thus the name. Because the weaver did not spend the time shearing, cleaning, carding, spinning and dyeing the wool, greater time could be devoted to design. That is why Germantown weavings display some of the most intricate and thought-out designs in Navajo weaving. The greater palette of color created a whole new dimension in which to work. The vibrant green, purple, red and yellow of the commercial wool were not easily achieved in homespun yarn. The crispness of these colors and the evenness of the spun yarn create spectacular textiles that belie their age.

This weaving was featured as the front postcard image of Galería el Zócalo announcing the below exhibition and sold as circa 1890.

Exhibited: "Efectos del País: A Collection of Antique Navajo Textiles", Galería el Zócalo, Santa Fe, NM, December 1997.
