Oil on canvas, signed 'Hantman' lower left.
30 x 40 in., 31 x 41 in. (frame).
Note: New York artist Murray Hantman lived and worked all over the United States, eventually finding his way to the artist colony on Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine where he and his wife, sculptor Jo Levy (see lots 12, 13 and 14), would live part-time for over forty years. Hantman was dedicated to the idea of exploration in life and his art. As a young artist, Hantman found work through the Federal Arts Project and worked with David Siqueiros and the Bloc group in Los Angeles. Returning to New York, Hantman was influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement and the later the Color Field painters. His mastery of color and form continued into his later work, always reflecting the beauty and calm of the natural world and his beloved seaside home in Maine.
Provenance: The estate of the artist.
