Two watercolor on paper, c. 1975, both signed 'Hantman' lower right and titled on the reverse, Monhegan dated on the reverse.
11 1/4 x 15 in. (sheet) and 12 x 17 5/8 in. (sheet), both unframed.
Note: Murray Hantman's first solo show at the Marquie Gallery in New York City was held the same year, 1945, that he first visited Monhegan Island in Maine. The following year, Hantman and his wife, sculptor Jo Levy, spent the summer in Maine where they would live on-and-off for thirty years. The landscape and seascape of Maine became a central subject of his work. As Hantman matured as an artist, his work moved away from narrative towards a more expressionistic and abstract style. The works by Hantman in this sale offer a selection of views of Maine in both his Realist and Abstract styles.
The estate of the artist.
