Note: Alabama-born artist Moses Tolliver came to painting in middle age after an accident at the furniture factory where he worked crushed his legs and forced him to retire. His employer encouraged him to take up a "hobby" so Tolliver began to paint with house paint on pieces of plywood and old furniture. Unable to stand, Tolliver painted seated on his bed, creating up to ten pictures a day. A solo show at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC brought him recognition in the 1980s. Tolliver's work is part of the strong Southern tradition of self-taught folk artists and can be found in the collection of museums around the country.
