Note: Archimedes (c.287-c.212 BCE) was a Greek mathematician, inventor and astronomer. The image of the screw at the top of this composition references the Claw of Archimedes, a hook-like weapon invented by Archimedes to help defend the port of Syracuse against amphibious assault. Archimedes also invented the catapult and a device used for bringing water into irrigation ditches called the Archimedes screw. A modern version of the screw is still used today in developing countries.
