Oil on canvas, signed 'M. Lobre' lower left.

29 x 23 1/2 in., 33 1/2 x 28 in. (frame).

Note: According to the literature listed below, this composition was "likely staged in a private collector's residence, on account of the depiction of three noteworthy historical items – the pianoforte on the right, the jardinière on the left and the ivory lute on the sofa. The pianoforte is by Erard Frères and may be the example sold from the Château de Fontainebleau in the 19th century. The jardinière is evidently by Jacob Frères and may be the one offered in the sale of the ‘Succession de Madame S.’ at Artcurial, Paris, on 9 Oct. 2013, lot 9. The white ivory lute would seem to be identical with that made by Edmond Saunier (b. 1730) for Queen Marie-Antoinette (1755–1793), which was sold by Maison de Ventes Richard, Villefranche, on 15 June 2019, lot 301. Another painting by the artist of the same room and pianoforte but otherwise
different musical instruments and decorative arts exists, perhaps executed for the same collector."

Literature: Maureen Cassidy-Geiger, Living with Architecture as Art, The Peter W. May Collection of Architectural Drawings, Models, and Artefacts, Volume II, p. 506, no. 9.43.
