Note: Austrian interdisciplinary artist Markus Schinwald creates mysterious and unsettling works through the manipulation and transformation of figures and environments. In his portrait work, as here, he alters 19th century paintings by painting bandages, splints and wires on to the faces. Schinwald has said of this work that he wants to "address contemporary issues and at the same time look at art history." The artist has confirmed the authenticity of this work.
