Composition, c. 1940, signed 'Mark Shoesnith', titled on a brass plaque and incised 'to Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt from the students of the New York Institute for the education of the blind'. 35 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 10 1/2 in.
Note: Blind sculptor Mark Showsmith's work was admired by Eleanor Roosevelt at a bazaar run by the N.Y Commission for the blind. This sculpture was presumably commissioned as a gift for Mrs. Rosevelt. The Institute is now known as the New York State Institute for Special Education and this year they are celebrating their 185th anniversary.
