Note: Engraved originally in gold for the Congressional Gold Medal, it was presented to George Washington on March 21, 1790 and is known as the ‘Washington Before Boston’ medal.  The original engagement took place on March 17, 1776 and Congress authorized the medal a week later March 25, 1776.  However, it wasn’t until 14 years later that the medal was finally presented to Washington by Thomas Jefferson. The original resides in the Boston Public Library. The dies cut by Benjamin Duvier were after a bust by Houdon.
