Note: Herbert Machiz (1919-1976) was a theatrical director who staged more than 300 plays over the course of his career which was cut short by his early death at age 57. Machiz premiered several works by Tennessee Williams and maintained a long professional relationship with Williams. Machiz felt that his largest contribution to American theatre was the work he did with the Artists Theatre, an off-Broadway collaboration between artists such as Larry Rivers, Elaine de Kooning and Alex Katz, and composers including Ned Rorem and Paul Bowles.
