Large Etruscan Bucchero Kantharos

Fitted with tall, flaring strap handles with struts and notched decoration indicating the influence of metallic prototypes. The impressed designs resemble fans with a comb-like device.

12 1/2 x 15 3/4 x 11 1/4 in.

Note: A nearly identical kantharos is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, item # 21.88.146. Kantharoi were most often used as wine cups, both for ceremonial purposes and at banquets. The shape was closely associated with the cult of Dionysus, god of the vine, as he was said to possess a kantharos that was forever refilling itself with wine.

This lot is accompanied by a certificate from The Art Loss Register, March 17, 2011.
