This model is included in the Kimbel and Cabus Catalog collection of photographs as number 380 in the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. It is also featured in Modern Gothic: The Inventive Furniture of Kimbel and Cabus, 1863-82, edited by Barbara Veith and Medill Higgins Harvey, pp. 168-9.

Note: This desk cabinet illustrates that Anton Kimbel drew on progressive academic theory and practice from his native Germany and the Hanoverian School of Design in particular. He was familiar with its leader, architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase (1812-1902) and his student, Edwin Oppler (1831-1880), both Modern Gothicists who believed that structure should be celebrated, and that form should express function. Oppler was also editor of "Die Kunst im Gewerbe" (Industrial Art) from 1872-1878, in which was published a drawing very similar to the upper portion of this cabinet. Two stags flanking a tree of life was a motif used often in Germanic Medieval design, and is revived here to celebrate the Modern Gothic.
