Note: Beuys began creating multiples in 1965 out of a desire to disseminate his ideas about social reform to a larger audience. His work during this time was transitioning towards a more political art, growing out of work he did in the early 60s with Fluxus. Beuys' early multiples, as here, are related to 'actions' and 'environments', the non-traditional idea of art as action in reflection of life. His multiples represent his utopian ideas about the new social order, referencing and restating Beuys' theory of 'social sculpture'. After 1970, Beuys concentrated on the production of multiples, seeing them as a transmitter from an art system to the social environment.

Literature: Schellmann 7.
