Watercolor and gouache on paper, unsigned, with label from Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield.
22 1/2 x 26 3/4 in., unframed.
Provenance: Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, MA.
Note: Foliate, or "leafy", heads are one of John Piper's most used motifs. He explored this subject in various mediums, including ceramics and tapestry. The motif is loosely based on medieval "green men" whose image was a recurring theme in architecture of the period.
