Watercolor on paper, 1939, signed 'Marin' and dated lower right, with label from White Art Museum, Cornell University and An American Place, NY.
18 1/2 x 24 in. (sheet), 28 1/2 x 34 in. (frame).
Note: John Marin is best known for his watercolors of coastal Maine, including many views of Cape Split where he bought a house in 1934. Cape Split was a central subject in Marin's art from 1933 until his death in 1953. An early Modernist, Marin was associated with the Stieglitz circle of young American artists whose work responded to avant-garde movements in Europe to represent the new, modern world they saw in America. This watercolor comes from the collection of the Stieglitz family.
Literature: John Marin, Part II, Catalogue Raisonne, by Sheldon Reich, lists a Cape Split watercolor from 1939 as no. 39.11, unillustrated. Its details match this work, however, there is a discrepancy in the dimensions.
Exhibited: An American Place, NY, New Oils, New Watercolors by John Marin, December 1939-January 1940, no. 12; Ithaca, NY, White Art Museum, Cornell University.
