Note: American artist John Levee found himself in Paris following his service as a pilot in World War II. He decided to stay and paint, studying at the Academie Julien from 1949-1951. He lived in Paris until his death in 2017. Though not in New York, Levee's early work was inspired by the Abstract Expressionists. He experimented with several other styles during the 1960s, eventually returning to the rich abstraction he is known for.
