Note: American painter John Levee spent his career in Paris as a prominent exponent of Abstract Expressionism in Europe. Born in California, Levee attended the California Institute of Art with Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn and Clifford Still before he was sent to war in 1944 as part of the liberation of France. Levee moved to France in 1949 and remained there for the rest of his life. Along with Sam Francis, Levee established himself as one of the most prominent American artists in post-war Paris.
