Carved granite, 1996. 20 x 20 in. Provenance: Horwitch Lew Allen Gallery, Santa Fe, NM. Note: Texas sculptor Jesus Bautista Moroles confirmed his love of his medium during a visit to Carrara, Italy where he walked the same marble quarry paths that carried Renaissance master Michelangelo. Moroles works primarily in granite, "tearing" the hard stone with wedges to create natural breaks. His sculptures juxtapose the rough, natural state of the stone with smooth, polished surfaces, showing the hard physical work it takes to shape a piece of granite, and uniting man with nature.
