Oil on canvas, 1826, signed 'Mauzaisse' and dated lower right. 29 x 24 in., 38 x 32 in. (frame).Note: This painting has the inkstamp of the French art supplier Belot on the reverse. The painter Michel Belot (1730-1792) founded the business with two half-brothers. It was later taken over by his wife, and then his son Michel (b. 1762). La Maison Belot was one of the most important suppliers in the 18th and 19th centuries, supplying canvases and colours to artist and restoring paintings. When Michel Belot Jr. retired in 1824, Pierre August Valléand Prince Charlemagne Bourniche, both pupils of Belot, formed a partnership and took over the business. The inkstamp on this canvas has 3 rue de l'Arbre sec address which was the last address of La Maison Belot in 1824 when Vallé & Bourniche took over. The business remained at this address until sometime after 1847 when it was moved to 3 rue des Grands - Augustins by a new owner.
