Note: Trajan's column sits in the Roman forum and was completed in 113 AD. It has a distinctive narrative spiral bas relief carving and was the model for several other commemorative columns, including the column of Marcus Aurelius and the Vendome column. Originally carved of massive Carrara marble blocks, its carvings recount the victories of the Emperor Trajan over the Dacians. The statue of Trajan originally surmounted the column is still depicted on most miniature bronze and marble versions, but was destroyed in the Middle Ages and replaced with a statue of St. Peter by Pope Sixtus V in 1587, and he still stands on the column in Rome today.
