Watercolor on paper, signed 'Lee-Smith' lower left.
10 x 12 in. (sheet), 15 x 17 3/4 in. (frame).
Note: American artist and teacher, Hughie Lee-Smith began his career working for the WPA in 1938. Like many of his contemporaries, Lee-Smith was concerned with the social injustices of the time and how his art could contribute to the struggle. His work represents his own personal feelings of alienation and isolation as an African American, though he stressed that he sought to create images that related to the struggles of humanity as a whole. Lee-Smith's compositions often show disparate figures in isolated settings and landscapes, as here and in the following lot.
By descent in the artist's family.
