51 1/2 x 79 in., 61  x 88 in. (frame).

Note: Painted the year that Delpy moved with his family to the Barbizon forest, this Salon-scale work depicts an autumn harvesting of grapes in the Nivernais, in the Loire Valley. The Sancerre hills are depicted here in a richly colored view at dawn with heavy impasto, reminiscent of his contemporaries, the Impressionists.

Exhibited: Salon of 1876, no. 615

Literature: An oil sketch for this painting is included in Michele Lannoy-Duputel, Hippolyte-Camille Delpy, Invitation au Voyage, p. 44,  illus. p. 99.
