Woodcut in colors on buff Maniai Gampi handmade, 1977, signed and dated in pencil, numbered 8/46.
39 x 18 1/2 in. (sheet), 42 x 22 in. (frame).
Literature: Harris 57; Tyler 180.
Note: Helen Frankenthaler made this ambitious woodcut at the studio of master printer Kenneth Tyler. Pegram Harris writes in Frankenthaler: A Catalogue Raisonné that "there was something magical between [Helen] Frankenthaler and [Ken] Tyler the season of the year that produced Essence Mulberry. Mulberries were ripe and abundant on a tree outside Tyler's studio and in color and transparency their juice was a perfect match for Frankenthaler's sensibility..." Frankenthaler had recently seen an exhibition of Old Master woodcuts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art which, together with the mulberries, became the inspiration for this beautiful and technically outstanding print.
