Note: Helen Farr grew up in New York City, enrolling at age sixteen at the Art Students League where she met and studied under John Sloan who became her mentor and a dear friend. In the 1930's, Helen spent several summers with the Sloans in New Mexico where they were active members of the Santa Fe art colony. In 1944, Sloan's wife Dolly died and later that year he and Helen married. Their marriage lasted only seven years, as John was forty years her senior and died in 1951. Helen took on the task of handling Sloan's estate, turning it into a philanthropic organization that supported local and regional art museums and institutions. She was particularly interested in supporting women in the arts and did so through scholarships and endowments to various organizations. Many of the works in this catalogue were gifts from Helen Farr Sloan to Wilkes University.
