Note: These are cast iron WPA era plaques from the New York City West Side elevated highway which was torn down during the late 1970's. The original set is a series of five designs in cast-iron depicting historic New York City seals and were designed by Rene P. Chambellan, circa 1928. The highway was originally known as the Miller Elevated Highway which was built between 1929 - 1951. Placed on the side of the structure at each intersection were five alternating seals of New York, from the first seal of New Netherland in 1623 to the seal used by the city of New York when the highway was erected in the 1930s.
