Note: New York painter George McNeil was a native -New Yorker, attending Brooklyn Tech High School, Pratt, and studying at the Art Students League. From 1932-1936, McNeil studied with Hans Hofmann and became his classroom assistant. He was one of the founding members of the American Abstract Artists group and worked on WPA mural projects. McNeil painted in a thoroughly Abstract Expressionist style throughout the 1950's and 60's, moving into a totally abstract style that broke with Hofmann's cubist-influences compositions.
